SAGE
Sage (Salvia officinalis) is an evergreen perennial in the Lamiaceae (Mint) family cultivated for it’s fragrant leaves. This aromatic herb has been used for thousands of years as both a culinary delight and healing remedy. We grow several varieties of Sage in the Spring to sell as seedlings — Grower’s Friend, Golden, Purple, and Pineapple! The most popular variety, Grower’s Friend, is what we cultivate and sell!
In season: April to late October
Nutritional value: Sage contains vitamins K (10% your DV!), as well as small amounts of magnesium, zinc, copper, and vitamins A and C. Sage also contains over 160 antioxidants that may help protect against chronic diseases, support brain function, and lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Storage tips: Wrap your Sage in a paper towel and place in a sealed container or bag — just ensure that your Sage is completely dry before doing so! If you’re seeking long-term storage for your Sage, simply chop it up, toss it into an ice cube tray, top off with a high quality EVOO, and freeze! Once frozen, you can pop them from the stray and store in a ziploc or container in the freezer. Alternatively, you can dry it and store in a jar long-term!
Culinary uses: Sage pairs best with rich meats like Duck and Sausage, Fall Squash, brown butter, and earthy beans! You can also try using it in baked goods and breads, as well as compounded butters and oils!
