Zero Food Waste Initiatives
At Sang Lee Farms, we are commited to reducing the food waste problem that we have in our country, and on a smaller scale at our farm.
During the summer, we have a "Ripe & Ugly" section for our Heirloom tomatoes whereby we charge 50% off for any tomato that has a blemish, is ripe & ready to eat today (but not tomorrow), or that is deformed.
In our kitchen, we jar & freeze tomatoes that have a few bad spots on them, and we pickle & preserve other produce that we can cut or process to get the "good stuff" from.
We have a large compost pile that we dump our kitchen scraps, weeds, & other decaying plant matter to in order to make more food for our soil.
Every week, we set aside any produce that visually does not make the cut for our farmstand and market, and a large truck from Island Harvest comes to pick it up. Last year we donated thousands of pounds of vegetables to people in need across long island.
Our different CSA dropsites also have specific food banks or pantries that they donate shares that have not been picked up to.
