THYME

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a flowering plant in the Lamiaceae (Mint) family cultivated for it’s fragrant leaves. This aromatic herb is used as an ingredient in cooking and as a herbal medicine. English Thyme, which is the variety we cultivate, is a bit spicier than Oregano and sweeter than Sage!

In season: April to late October

Nutritional value: Thyme contains vitamins A and C, as well as copper, iron and manganese. It also contains Thymol, an active essential oil with natural antiseptic, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties.

Storage tips: Wrap your Thyme in a paper towel and place in a sealed container or bag — just ensure that your Thyme is completely dry before doing so! If you’re seeking long-term storage for your Thyme, simply chop it up, toss it into an ice cube tray, top off with a high quality EVOO, and freeze! Once frozen, you can pop them from the stray and store in a ziploc or container in the freezer. Alternatively, you can dry it and store in a jar long-term!

Culinary uses: Thyme pairs best with roasted meats, stews, and soups. Simply remove the leaves from the woody stems if using as a garnish!
