SWEET POTATOES
Sweet Potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) are native to the Americas, and are a part of the morning glory family. Sweet Potatoes are indeed not yams, as those are from the lily family and are native to Africa and Asia. Check out our Sweet Potato infographic below to see the varieties we cultivate!
In season: Mid-September through the Winter
Nutritional value: Sweet Potatoes are loaded with vitamin A — one large Sweet Potato contains nearly twice your recommended daily value! Our Sweet Potatoes also contain excellent amounts of vitamins C and B6, manganese, and beta-carotene. Our Purple-Flesh Sweet Potatoes also contain anthocyanins, which are an immune-boosting antioxidant!
Storage tips: Sweet Potatoes can be stored for several weeks to months when places in a cool, dark, dry place. If storing long term, check them regularly for blemishes as to reduce the chance of mold forming. Do not store them in the refrigerator, as they don’t fair well in cold or moist conditions.
Culinary uses: What can’t you do with a Sweet Potato? Bake, roast, fry, grill, mash, or puree! Cook whole Sweet Potatoes with their skin on to retain the most nutrients and moisture — you can always remove it later, if necessary, although we highly recommend eating the skin! Have a Sweet tooth? Sweet Potatoes are commonly paired with warming spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger — we love a dessert Sweet Potato with some Almond Butter drizzle! They can also be mashed and added to any number of baked goods — Sweet Potato Pie, anyone?
