What should I plant next to eachother?

Companion plating is the practice of growing plants next to eachother to encourage support. This is nature’s way of limiting pest damage, boosting soil fertility, reducing weed competition, and, ultimately, increasing yields. Adding flowers to your garden can also attract pollinators, and often deters pests — try planting edible flowers like Nasturtium or Calendula!

Farmer Tip: If you eat it together, they probably grow well together! Think Tomatoes & Basil, Cucumbers & Dill, etc.

How far apart should I space my plants?

Spacing all depends on growing conditions that you are implementing. A good rule of thumb is the more space you have between the plants, the less likely it is for them to compete for nutrients. Fruiting plants like Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplant, Cucumbers, and Zucchini all vary in spacing, however we always put between a foot and a half and two feet between each plant.

How much sunlight do my plants need?

Light needs all depend on the plants you have! A general rule of thumb is at least 6-8 hours.

Under our “Garden and Plant Info” Tab, you can learn more about the specific needs of the Herb and Vegetable Starters that we sell!

Plants that need full sun (closer to 8+ hours) include: Cucumbers, Zucchini, Melons, Eggplant, Tomatoes, Peppers, Basil, Rosemary, Sage, and Thyme.

Plants that can grow in partial shade (4-6 hours of sunlight) include: Beans, Peas, Beets, Onions, Radishes, Chives, Mint, Parsley, and Tarragon.

Plants that can grown with limited sunlight (2-4 hours) include: Kale, Arugula, Lettuce, Spinach, and Swiss Chard.

How often should I water my plants?

This depends on the soil you’re working with, the weather, and the type of plants you’re growing. Again, refer to our “Garden and Plant Info” Tab for more specific watering requirements for each plant that we sell.
