WATERMELON

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a flowering plant in the Cucurbit family grown for its large edible fruits. They are technically a berry with a hard rind, whose sweet, juicy flesh most find irresistible come Summer time! We grow Seedless and Seeded varieties, all of which are Certified Organic, and by default, Non-GMO. How can they be seedless and non-GMO, you ask? Organic Seedless Watermelons are produced through a natural cross-breeding / pollination of a male diploid plant (two sets of chromosomes) with a female tetraploid plant (four sets of chromosomes) — creating a sterile (seedless) hybrid! Check out our Watermelon infographic below to see the varieties we cultivate!

In season: August

Nutritional value: Watermelon is about 91% water, making it super hydrating for those hot Summer days! It also contains vitamins C, A, and B5, as well as potassium and copper. Watermelon also provides the largest dietary source of citrulline, an essential amino acid.

Storage tips: Watermelons don’t ripen once you harvest them! If storing at room temperature on the counter, eat within a week. Storing them in the fridge extends their shelf life significantly — up to two weeks. Plus, we recommend eating them cold for a more refreshing bite!

Culinary uses: While we love a traditional slice of Watermelon, you can also juice it, add it to smoothies or adult beverages, make it into sorbet, or… eat it with a spoon (no judgement here)!
