HOW A CSA WORKS

BENEFITS FOR YOU

  • Signing up for the CSA is an investment in your health for the whole year ahead. The decision has been made and you will eat more fresh healthy meals because of it.

Vegetables grown closer to you will be fresher and higher nutrient density since they haven’t been shipped across the county.

We teach you how to prep/store and cook healthy simple recipes featuring the seasonal produce each week. You will start to cook with the seasons which is the healthiest way to eat!

  • The CSA takes the middle man out, so you save $ by purchasing direct from the farm. You will save around 20-30% (greater savings for full share) off retail pricing on the veggies you recieve. It is even less expensive than the grocery store organic veggies from California.

Members enjoy 10% off additional purchases at the farm stand or markets.

  • Forge a real connection with your food and your farmer by getting it directly from the source!

Visit the farm for our annual CSA farm tour and tasting day in May ! Learn about the farm and see it first hand.

Connect with your community at the pickup sites, share recipes and tips. Share extra food with your neighbor.

  • CSA’s are notorious for having new and different items that you must learn about and figure out what to do with! Through the guidance of our newsletters and resources (instagram story cooking tutorials) you will learn new veggies and LOVE them. Most people wonder how they went so long without knowing certain veggies exist!

  • Convenient pickup locations at your workplace, community centers and in your local Long Island region. Pickup all your veggies and add on shares in one place to avoid going to the grocery store so frequently

  • Partial & Full sized shares to accommodate household size & veggie consumption.

Add on shares Fruit from our partner farms.

Payment plans to break up the payment so you don’t have to invest a large amount of $ at one time.

BENEFITS FOR FARMER

  • When you sign up for your CSA in the winter, you are putting money directly into growing your food via seeds, fertilizer, soil, labor, and overhead to run the business when we are not growing / selling. This is a game changer for us, as it reduced our need to take out high interest loans.

  • When we know the number of CSA members by May, we can then plan how much to grow for you! There is little waste this way, and the risk of growing and not selling the veggies is lessened = less food waste. This is extremely helpful for farmers.

Being able to give what is in season and what we have allows us to work around crop failures and weather events that might create a shortage. Every year you get different items, but the seasonality of certain veggies remains consistent.

  • The CSA at its core, removes the middle man so that the FARMER sells directly and delivers direct to YOU. This is radical and rare, and is why the program puts more $ in the farmer’s pocket while keeping the cost below retail for you! Makes you realize how much of the $ you spend in the store goes to the distributors / vegetable brokers.

  • The CSA allows us to deliver and serve many more communities on Long Island and in Brooklyn beyond just our local North Fork. This gives more people on the island a chance to support local farms and have access to fresh organic produce. We can feed more people without having to go to a market in every town.

A CSA is a relationship. Between you, your food and your farmer. The commitment is strong and the connection is real. In the landscape of today’s corporate food system that is failing you and your farmers, the CSA model is a radical act of food sovereignty. Being a part of the CSA program puts your hard earned dollars back into the local long island economy and community, ensuring that small family run farms here with restorative agriculture principles survive and continue into future generations.

WHO WE ARE

Regenerative

Our farm has been recognized by the Leopold Conservation award in 2020 for leading the way in sustainability in the environment as a farm due to our complex diversified cover cropping, water conservation, and limited till practices.

Watch the video above to learn more about the details of our deep love and care for the soil, the environment and the food we grow.

Organic

Our farm has been certified organic by NOFA NY for over 15 years! We grow all our produce with organic methods because we believe in it. When Fred was farming in the 90’s, he decided he didn’t want to use synthetic fertilizers or pesticides anymore as a means of preserving the health of the soil, the water, the bees, his family running in the fields, and himself as the primary spray applicator. In 2019, NOFA awarded us with “Farmer’s of the Year” because of our dedication to Organic principles. Read an article and listen to a podcast about it here.

3rd Generation Family Farm

Sang Lee Farms was started in the 1940’s by George Lee and his cousins / brothers further west on Long Island. They grew all Asian veggies for wholesale markets on the east coast. In 1987 when the markets changed and George Lee passed away, Fred Lee (his son) moved the operation to the North Fork from the moriches to its current location. When it was no longer viable to grow wholesale veggies on long island, Fred and Karen diversified and shifted to CSA’s, markets, and the farmstand (direct to consumer). Today, the farm is run by Fred, William Lee (his son) and William’s partner Lucy.

WE GROW VEGETABLES THAT ARE ALWAYS:

The Best Quality

We harvest, wash, and handle our vegetables with love, care and cleanliness. We are committed to food safety practices following FYSSMA protocols and water testing. We take great pride in washing the veggies so they arrive beautiful and alive.

Ultra Fresh

Fresh veggies are selected and harvested from our North Fork farm fields less than 48 hours before we pack and deliver them to your neighborhood dropsite. No shipping across the country which means your food is still full of life and flavor.

Flavorful

When you grow vegetables in soil that is healthy and harvest them right before eating, the flavor of them is far superior to grocery store veggies. Fresh food tastes better, and we make sure we give you the freshest tastiest veggies you’ve ever had.

Diverse

We grow over 300 different heirloom & organic NON GMO varieties of vegetables so you can taste new flavors, new colors, and new veggies! From the neighborhoods we feed to the staff we employ, we value diversity.

WHAT TO EXPECT

As noted above, we offer two size shares, Partial and Full. This is to accomodate the consumption of different household sizes, and also how many veggies you start off eating. The full share contains the full diversity of what we grow and have available week by week, and is the best savings / value. The partial share contains about 2/3 of the items that the full share receives weekly. The partial share won’t always get all the items that the full share gets. See below to get an idea of how we try to structure the share contents each week. Of course this depends on the season, what’s growing well, and many more factors. You can also reference last year’s harvest lists.

 FAQs

  • We send you a newsletter every week with recipes, tips and storage suggestions for the veggies in the share. We will also give you access to our CSA member area on our new website with videos, tutorials and all sorts of resources that will help guide you.

  • Partial shares are great for people who are just starting out with the CSA, are a single person, or a couple who eat out a lot. It really comes down to how often you cook and eat at home, and how much of your meal is dominated by veggies. I suggest a full share for families or people looking to actively increase their veggie consumption.

  • Our CSA program includes many veggies and varieties that you won’t find in other programs (seedless melon, heirloom tomatoes, asparagus and more). We also include several unique Asian veggies. We are known to give more than you pay for, and our members appreciate the variety and bounty. We also have high standards for clean fresh veggies.

  • We or the dropsite coordinators donate all the shares that are not picked up every week at the dropsite. If you can’t pickup or are on vacation, you can have a friend or family member get the share for you that week! We do not hold them, or double up the following week. Instead they are DONATED locally to someone in need!

  • This is tricky, because the CSA share is all about accepting what we provide, trying new things, and being open to shifting your usual veggies to the ones that are seasonal. I would suggest you shop at our farmstand and markets if you are very picky !

  • Unfortunately not. We really encourage you to do your research on the program before joining so you can make sure you are up for the commitment. It is a financial commitment and a commitment to your health. The food you get every week holds you accountable.
