STRAWBERRIES
Strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa), a member of the Rosaceae family, are low-growing perennial plants. As a planting of Strawberries grow, the root system becomes woody, and the “mother” crown sends out runners that touch the ground and take root, thus enlarging the plant — this is why it’s called a Strawberry patch! This berry is a June delicacy, they’re only around for about three to four weeks!
In season: June
Nutritional value: One cup of Strawberries has more vitamin C than an orange! They are also loaded with fiber, manganese, folate, and potassium. Given their color, more than 25 different anthocyanins (an antioxidant) have been found in Strawberries in both their skin and flesh!
Storage tips: Only wash your Strawberries right before eating for the longest shelf life! For storage for up to a few days, you can either place unwashed, completely dry strawberries into a clean glass jar and seal it with a lid, or place whole, unwashed berries in a single layer on a paper towel-lined plate uncovered. In addition, you can also wash, chop & freeze for future smoothies!
Culinary uses: Like most berries, Strawberries are versatile! Enjoy them fresh, add them to smoothies, bake them into desserts, make jam, or go the savory route and add to hot sauce, salsas, or salad dressings!
