CANTALOUPE

Cantaloupe (Cucumis melo) is a flowering plant in the Cucurbit family grown for its edible fruits.

In season: August

Nutritional value: Cantaloupe is over 90% water, making it a great choice for hot Summer days! It also contains vitamins C, A, and B9 (folate) — one cup provides 72% your DV of vitamin C!

Storage tips: Unlike their Watermelon counterparts, Cantaloupe does ripen after harvesting! Leave your unripe Cantaloupe on the counter out of direct sunlight for a few days. You can gauge it’s ripeness by smelling the “butt” — if it smells super fragrant, it’s ready to eaten! Ripe Cantaloupe can be stored in the fridge for up to five days, and cut Cantaloupe should be eaten within three days of slicing to ensure freshness!

Culinary uses: While we love our Cantaloupe cubed, you can also juice it, add it to smoothies or adult beverages, make it into sorbet, or… eat it with a spoon (no judgement here)! Try going the savory route as well by adding it to salads!
